The Air Max 1: Why the 1987 Original Still Outsells Everything
The Air Max 1.
Still The One.
Tinker Hatfield put the Air unit on the outside in 1987 and changed footwear permanently. Nearly forty years on it is our best selling silhouette. Here is where it came from, what we have in stock, and what it costs elsewhere.

Most sneakers that last four decades do it on nostalgia. The Air Max 1 does it on shape.
It is low, cleanly panelled, and it goes with almost anything, which is more than can be said for most of what sits beside it on a shelf. It is the pair people reach for when they want something recognisable without wanting to be looked at. That is a narrow target, and the Air Max 1 has been hitting it since 1987.
It has been the strongest performer in our Nike range this year, which is why we now carry more colourways of it than any other silhouette in the store.
A Window Into The Sole
Nike had been using Air cushioning since 1979, but nobody could see it. You were asked to take it on trust.
Tinker Hatfield trained as an architect before he joined Nike, and the answer came from a building. The Pompidou Centre in Paris puts its pipes, ducts and structural frame on the outside rather than hiding them behind a facade. Hatfield wanted to do the same thing with the cushioning: cut away part of the midsole, expose the Air unit, and let people look at the thing they were being sold.
The Air Max 1 launched in 1987 in University Red and it has not really been away since. Air Max Day falls on 26 March every year, which tells you something about how a running shoe ended up with its own date in the calendar.
Six Worth Knowing About
Seventeen colourways are available right now. These six cover the range, from the reissued big bubble tooling to the pairs sitting under a hundred pounds.

The '86 line brings back the larger Air unit from the original tooling, which is the detail collectors care about and the reason these keep selling out. Denim panelling on a black base, and the closest you will get to how the shoe looked when it first arrived.

Built on the golf outsole, which changes the whole stance of the shoe and gives it a grip pattern nothing else in the line has. Past season and no longer at retail. We have this and the White Black in the same model.

A nod to the year Nike was founded, and one of the releases that leans hardest into the archive without becoming a costume. Another past season pair that has been off retail shelves for a while.

Suede and leather in light bone with a psychic blue Swoosh, sitting on a sail midsole. This is the one to start with if you want an Air Max 1 that goes with everything already in the wardrobe. It also has the deepest size run of anything in this list.

Newly in. Jade running through the panelling on a clean base, which is enough colour to notice without tipping into loud. If you already own a neutral pair and want the second one to do something, this is it.

How Our Pricing Sits Against RRP
The Air Max 1 Essential carries a recommended retail price of £134.99 in the UK. Across the wider market, current season pairs sit between £134.99 and £184.99 depending on the release.
Sixteen of the seventeen colourways we hold sit below that figure. The cheapest is £79.99, which is fifty five pounds below recommended retail. The one exception is the Essential 'Off Noir Vast Grey' at £139.99.
How It Compares
| Recommended retail, Air Max 1 Essential | £134.99 |

| Wider market, current season range | £134.99 to £184.99 |
| Epic Kick, in stock | £79.99 to £139.99 |

| Highest in our collection | £139.99, five pounds over |
| Pairs below RRP | 16 of the 17 in stock |
We would not claim to be the cheapest on every pair, every day of the year. Retailers discount periodically, and when they do, a current season colourway can be found for less elsewhere. That is the nature of the trade and we see no reason to be coy about it.
What we would say is that our pricing does not depend on a sale to look reasonable. On all but one pair it sits below recommended retail as a matter of course, not as a seasonal event.
Most Of This Is No Longer Sold At Retail
More than half of what we hold is past season. The '86 Big Bubble pairs, both Golf models, Since 72, the OG Sport Red. These sold through on release and are not being made again.
There is no price to compare against on those, because there is nowhere else to buy them.
That is usually the reason people find their way here. Not a few pounds off an Essential, but the pair that sold out eighteen months ago, in the right size, verified and ready to ship.

Nike Air Max 1 FAQs
How much is the Nike Air Max 1?
The Air Max 1 Essential carries a recommended retail price of £134.99 in the UK. At Epic Kick our colourways run from £79.99 to £139.99, with sixteen of the seventeen in stock sitting below that figure. Klarna Pay in 3 is available at checkout.
Does the Air Max 1 fit true to size?
Yes. Take your usual size. Fit guidance is shown on every product page under Size & Fit Advice.
What is the difference between the Air Max 1 and the Air Max 1 '86?
The '86 releases use the original tooling with the larger Air unit, often called the big bubble. Standard Air Max 1 releases use the smaller unit that became the norm shortly after launch. Visually the '86 sits slightly higher at the heel.
Why do you have colourways that are no longer at retail?
We are an independent retailer, so we are not limited to the current season. A good part of our Air Max 1 range is past season stock that sold through on release and is no longer available at retail.
Are Epic Kick sneakers authentic?
Yes. Every item is verified genuine before dispatch and sealed with our authentication tag. Full details are on our Authenticity Guarantee page.
How quickly will my order arrive?
Orders placed before 2pm Monday to Friday are dispatched for next day delivery. UK shipping is free on orders over £120, tracked and insured.
